Aside from System Reserved, Recovery, EFI, and OEM partitions, if only one volume exists on the system disk, it is highly recommended to shrink C drive to create more storage allocations. Windows Server 2019 and 2022 include the "Shrink Volume" function within the native Disk Management console to decrease partition size without experiencing data loss. Unlike external utilities, the built-in system tool can shrink the system volume on the fly without requiring a server reboot. However, it can only decrease partition parameters from right to left, placing the newly generated unallocated block strictly on the right boundary. Furthermore, native tools cannot shrink the system drive under certain operational conditions.

Steps to shrink C drive in Windows Server 2019/2022 using Disk Management:

  1. Press the Windows key + X simultaneously on your keyboard and select Disk Management from the configuration list.
  2. Right-click the C drive volume and select "Shrink Volume" from the context menu.
  3. Enter your desired storage reduction value in megabytes and click the Shrink button. If you do not input an amount manually, the maximum available space will be allocated by default.

For example, if critical virtual memory pages, hibernation data, or system log structures reside at the center of the disk map, you cannot shrink the system drive past that sector boundary, regardless of available capacity.
